I For One Welcome Our New Blood-Thirsty Cyberterrorist Overlords!

September 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment

With time running out on public key encryption along with the rampant spread and evolution of the storm botnet. It might be time to consider the possibility that whomever controls the botnet may soon be able to crack into any and every bank in the world and steal everybody’s money. We may be on the verge of the largest bank heist in the history of the world.

This poses several interesting questions. If you knew that you could crack one of the most powerful locks in the history of the world, say one of only a handful of encryption algorithms available for widespread deployment, what would you do? Certainly if you started wrecking havoc the world across, drastic and swift countermeasures would be taken to eliminate the effectiveness of your decryption powers (and possibly you). This may leave you with only a short window of opportunity for a swift round of heists. Regardless it would still rain down terror from above the likes of which we have never seen before.

What a Hollywood story it would make! Terrorist’s plotting to control the largest most powerful computer network in the world and using it to transfer $100 trillion into a bank account. How would you possibly withdraw that amount? Could you seize power from a government? To keep that much money safe, you would probably need an army. We’ve all heard the golden rule: the one with all the gold makes the rules.

I for one welcome our new blood-thirsty cyberterrorist overlords! …. just kidding, I hope this never happens, because that would suck. :(

The Southsnake has been touting these claims for years now. I guess we better find a nice mattress to stuff some money into. But then again, that could render a currency valueless.
