There has been a lot of noise online over the last month regarding service troubles particularly with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The timing of these troubles should come as little surprise to anyone. The influx of new consoles and games sold over the holiday season has overwhelmed their infrastructure.
Pile on the overlapping vacation days of several key employees and you’ve got the perfect storm culminating to bring down the Xbox Live community repeatedly. This, in typical fashion, has led to an internet flame war against IW and Xbox Live for negligence as some reported outages have lasted days.
Already some sources have even suggested that Xbox has committed to Refunding user’s fees. It’s doubtful however that they would ever refund a year’s worth of service. It’s much more likely that we’ll see them extend service on wholesale basis. The system is already in place to distribute one month subscription cards for a litany of reasons (ie., when you get your 360 back from the Red Circle of Death fairies), why not tap into that?
In the past Microsoft has been very good at addressing quality issues. See $1 Billion write-off to fix Red Circle of Death problems. I personally have had to return my Xbox 360 for this and can attest that while speaking to the customer service representative was quite infuriating the turn around time was fantastic.
Be sure to check back for updates as MS should settle this ASAP.
